Some tips and tricks how to make a speed drawing video.
If you have additional tips or if you find mistakes in this guide please let me know, thank you.
(please excuse my bad english.)

1. Drawing and Filming: :painter:
---------------------------

Drawing and Lightsource: :spotlight-left::pencil:

:bulletblue: Set up the place where you draw comfortable, the light should come from the top(preferred) or left side of the drawing if you are right-handed. That way the working area is not covered by the shadow of your hand. The arm of the drawing hand should pont in the direction of the lightsource to cast a shadow only under your arm. Shadows can cause huge brightness flickering in the time lapse.

:bulletblue: I fix the single sheet of paper or canvas of my drawing on the table or easel or wherever to prevent the drawing from jumping around in the time lapse video. Try to make the video smooth.

:bulletblue: Daylight as the only lightsource can cause flickering in the timelapse video. Especially on clouded or rainy days =)
The drawing should be lit evenly if possible.

Camera: :camera:

:bulletblue: It's good to set up the video camera on a stable tripod so it won't shake the view in the video. Very good are sidewards extendable tripods to position the camera over the drawing.
(I've been asked many times what kind of tripod I use: "Manfrotto, TR055XPROB + HD804RC2")

:bulletblue: The camera should be on the side of the lightsource (from left side if you are righthanded) and as vertical as possible to the drawing. So you don't film the back of your hand hiding the drawing and (especially with graphite) the drawing doesn't reflect the light in a bad way.

:bulletblue: Try to find a camera position where you don't cover your drawing with your shoulder or head.

:bulletpink::bulletpink::bulletpink: Some digital video cameras have a special feature: "Time Lapse Recording" (!) That is great for filming speed paintings. It economizes the editing in a great way and provides very small footage data compared to real time recording. Saves many hours of editing! One picture every 3 or 5 seconds works nice. =)
If you want to buy a new camera please make sure it has this special time lapse recording feature.

:bulletblue: Make a little test filming to see if you have a good drawing position and camera view.

:bulletblue: I use a cable as a power supply for my camera instead of accucells. That way the camera can maintain its position precisely for many days. Taking the camera of the tripod and changing accucells would change the view each time. I leave the camera turned on for the whole day and enjoy the mini time lapse preview of the last drawing session when taking a break =)

(update)
The animation below shows my camera and light setup:

2. Editing: :pc:
-----------

:bulletblue: The video should not be to long, it's better people watch your video twice than not watching it even to the end or have to fast-forward. It's good for the video if it shows fast progress. I recommend 2-3 minutes for the length of a speed painting video.

:bulletblue: It's not easy to pic the right music for a speed drawing or painting. It's good if it matches the theme of the drawing somehow.

:bulletblue: A good and free programm for cutting, editing, adding music and text to your video is "Windows Live Movie Maker" (you can download it here -->windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi…)

:bulletblue: Blender has also great video editing tools, it's free to use and you can download it here: www.blender.org/

:bulletblue: to record a digital speed painting "Microsoft Expression Encoder" can be used. It's also free: www.microsoft.com/de-de/downlo…

3. Uploading: :film:
---------------

For an upload on YouTube:
We like to show our videos to a lot of people and make them easy to be found on the search engines.

To choose your own thumbnail for your video instead Youtube's suggestions you can upload a custom picture if you are a youtube partner: :deviation:

I recommend a non-public testupload to see if everything is in place. Your Youtube watchers get notified as soon as you change your video to "public"

:bulletblue: Use the right and most matching keywords.

:bulletblue: Use the most important keywords at the beginning of your description.

:bulletblue: Use the most important keywords in the title of your video.

:bulletblue: YouTubes Video Editing Tools can be used to adjust overall brightness, contrast and saturation of your video. In some cases video quality can be improved but it can change the thumbnail preview.

:bulletblue:  Youtubes Video Editing Tools can be used to get an alternative thumbnail preview, too. But i recommend it only on fresh uploaded videos (non-public) or if you are very unhappy with Youtubes thumbnail suggetions.

:bulletblue: I use the "save as" option to see first how it looks without to change the original video.

:bulletblue: If you are a youtube partner then you can upload custom video preview thumbnails.

I've found most of these tips during the work on my figure study drawing video:

:icon8dfineart:

Once the camera and light is set up, the filming of a time lapse is as easy as turning on the light! Just the record button has to be pressed, thats all! I completely forget about the recording when drawing now.

Maybe some of these tips come in handy.

I would try and make 2 stacks of books then place a shelf on top like a bridge and put the iPad on the shelf so that the camera can look down.

There are several possibilities to add music. You can upload to YouTube without music and then select some from YouTube audio library. Or you can use a video editing program to add audio. I use Blender to edit my videos.

try uploading it to gramblr, it's a desktop app that lets you upload videos from your computer to instagram! You can use the default video editor on your desktop, export it into a video format, open gramblr, and drag and drop the file (or click browse and find where you saved it!)
or if you're doing it all on your phone I can't really help, all I know is that in general you want your video to be short. Try finding a video editing app/using your camera on your phone.

What kind of tripod would you recommend for someone who wants to try this out first with a cell phone first before investing in a camera?

Ps: I have a Galaxy S5

I would just use a board or shelf above the drawing, so that the lens can hang over the edge.

Really nice post,

I want to share something, I bought a LIVE GAMER PORTABLE, it records like a charm (clicking a buton and that´s it), and the computer is just working at averge no adicional process sucking cpu power...all the recording is done by de LGP. And btw the only issue is that you need a good video converter, because the video files are kind of large (not a big issue).

How I was looking for this... Thanks a ton!

Can you tell me what kind of cameras are good for this kind of thing? I use a Canon PowerShot A590 IS to take pictures of my drawings and post them up here, and the picture quality is good, I guess. But can you shed more light on this for me?

Thanks a lot!
Cheers,
Nisha

I suggest to make a little test drawing and filming with your camera and see if you like the result. My friend Ambr0 is using a photo camera to film his drawings and he makes great videos.

HI :). I have a question - I'm thinking about making that kind of video, but I miss one VERY important part - a camera. I don't have any... well, I DO have, but it's powered just by batteries that won't last for too long.... So, I wanted to ask if you don't know about some acceptable good camera, but not too expensive, I can't afford it. ;) Also, it should accomplish this conditions: 1) powered by computer/plug - so I can shoot and power it at the same time  2) good picture (I don't care about sound;)) 3) timelapse - well, that's not the most important thing, but of course, it would be better, if the camera had that option. I know, that exist some special timelapse cameras too, but they're quite expensive, so I don't know...
I would be really glad for some tips... 'cause I've searched for some cameras, but I haven't found anything.... thanks. :)
P.S..: Sorry for my English. :D ;)

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I don't know which camera is good. I used a Samsung Q10. It's ok to start, but the videoquality could be better. Maybe they improved it by now, I'm not up to date.
To save some money I recommend to borrow a camera first or buy one from 2nd hand. Then you can see which features you need most.
I think if you tell this detailed information to a professional camera salesman at some multi media store then he will pull out a few models. =)

Well, thanks. :) I'm still not very sure, but I talked to my friend and she told me something about one model her parents have - and it sounded quite satisfying. So... ehm, yeh, if I won't be able to buy the camera they have, i think I will try to find something fron 2nd hand. Good idey, thank you. :D
